Soviet Potsdam: Private Tour of the Forbidden City

In the summer of 1945, the Cecilienhof Palace and the surrounding "Neuer Garten" park were closed to the public for the Potsdam Conference. The most powerful heads of state in the world came to Potsdam: Joseph Stalin, Harry S. Truman and Winston Churchill. The conference was an end to World War II, but also the starting point of the Cold War. For almost five decades, the Soviet military town No. 7, a “forbidden city”, was located next to the New Garden park. It was one of the most important intelligence sites of the Soviets during the Cold War. Here were, among other things, the German headquarters of the military counterintelligence of the KGB and a remand prison. On the tour you will learn more about the work and life in this forbidden city. Finally, head to the Glienicke Bridge that became world famous as the "Bridge of Spies" where the 2015 Hollywood film of the same name was shot. During the Cold War, agents were exchanged between East and West because the bridge was the border between the GDR and the American sector in West Berlin.

It was very easy to find the meet up spot since the guides were wearing lanyards and there was a tour sign. Johnny was an attentive and knowledgeable guide for our trip to Potsdam. He made sure everyone had the right train ticket, knew where to go, and was available for any questions. He had many photos printed to help support his stories. Definitely recommend! My tour was about 4 hours round trip from Berlin (10am to around 2pm).

It was an impressive tour. Our guide gave us a lot of information about the time of the castles and life there. We were traveling with our relatives from Canada and we all loved the tour. Our guide spoke very understandable English, was very engaging and had a very good sense of the level of information needed. It was an all-round beautiful and very impressive day.

We did this tour with 7 older women. Our concern that 2.5 hours might be too long was completely unfounded. Our young guide Holger was very competent and authentic. He always answered our questions. Through his personal family history, he allowed us to be a very lively part of this difficult time. We would book a private tour with Holger again at any time.

Excellent tour, very well put together, very informative. Both our guide Sabine and our driver Andreas were great, a great team and they looked after us wonderfully. We can unreservedly recommend it.

Our castle guide was just great! Charmingly funny ( for me as a native of Basel it was a pleasure ) and very competent. Our driver was great too. Best wishes to both E. RothCueni
