1. From Athens: Delphi and Meteora 2-Day Guided Tour

Embark on a 2-day tour that takes you to the ancient city of Delphi and across the scenic Plain of Thessaly to Kalambaka. Explore the picturesque small town located at the foot of Meteora, the site of one of the most important groups of Greek Orthodox monasteries. Detailed Itinerary Day 1 Start the day with a relaxing drive through the beautiful Greek countryside, passing by the cities of Thebes, Levadia, and Arachova, before arriving in Delphi at around noon. At Delphi, you’ll have the opportunity to visit this important site that appears in Greek mythology. In ancient times, Delphi was considered to be the center of the universe and was guarded by a python dragon that was killed by Apollo. See the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, which was built in the 4th century B.C. and was destroyed by Emperor Theodosius I in 390 A.D. It was also here that the priestess Pythia would foretell the future from the famous Oracle of Delphi. Visit the theater that seated 5,000 spectators and hosted plays, poetry readings, and festivals. At the nearby stadium, the Pythian Games were held every 4 years. Athletes from all over the Greek world would come to compete, and these games would become the predecessor to the modern Olympics. At the end of the day, drive to Kalambaka, a lovely city with beautiful gardens and magnificent views of the Meteora rocks. Overnight in Kalambaka. Day 2 In the morning, head to Meteora for a tour of the fascinating cliff-top monasteries. Be amazed by the cliffs, which average a height of 1,000 feet, and were first inhabited in the 9th century by a group of hermit monks who lived on the rock towers Today 6 monasteries remain out of the original 20. Views of the entire valley from the magnificent rock towers, and the peace of the surroundings, make this a unique place to visit. On the way back to Athens you’ll make a short stop at the monument to Leonidas, the King of Sparta who died in 480 B.C. at the famous Battle of Thermopylae.

had a really small group (just me, a solo traveller, and one other couple). Nikolas was a really friendly, welcoming guide and I especially enjoyed the visit to the monastery that was not at Meteora, but in Kalambaka. you get picked up from the train station (and sent there as well, but there was a miscommunication which they were very apologetic about, and I wasn't upset about it!). regarding the tour itself, the guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you to the monasteries, allowing you to say many more than you would have been able to yourself. do note that they do not enter the monasteries with you. the hotel they booked for me was comfortable, clean, and came with breakfast. overall a really great experience, and I imagine it would be great for families as well (although note that you will still have to climb quite a few stairs to enter the monasteries). would recommend!

The tours was absolutely worth every penny. Once in Meteora, the views were out of this world. People were very accommodating and helpful. Sunset tour was totally worth it. However, we went in low season (October) and there were many people on the rocks, so I imagine it would be crazy in summer. The guides were so knowledgeable about the history of Meteora and answered all our questions. I recommend doing the hiking tour the following day if you don or have mobility issues. It was amazing. We didn’t do Delphi tour last day because our flight out of Athens was later that night and we became anxious that we may miss the flight.

There was someone to greet us at the pick up point and direct us to our coach bus. The bus was very clean and comfortable. The guides were very knowledgeable and easy to understand. They gave us plenty of stops for breaks and the tours were not rushed. The hotel accommodations were pleasant and the food was good. They took our bags to and from the bus. The bus drivers were very good. It was a long tour but we thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was a great experience. Our guides were very knowledgeable and patiently explained the history of the sites we visited and overall information about Greece as well. Meteora is a must see especially if you are already doing the Delphi tour. Our overnight hotel stay was very good and comfortable and dinner and breakfast was also great. Overall a very good and highly recommended tour. Khush & Sanjay Vancouver Canada
