Full description

Take a guided walk through the city of Aberdeen to discover its history and food culture. Start your tour at the Maritime Museum and learn about the maritime history and how fishing contributed to the development of Aberdeen and the influences this had.

Take in views over the Aberdeen Harbour, the fish district, and learn about some remnants of the late medieval parts of the city. The first tasting and course will be related to maritime influences. The Green was once the heart of working-class Aberdeen and where the weekly market used to be held. Today, there are several great food places including and occasional markets and festival. Hear of the brewsters who used to call the Green home. Belmont Street is the international quarter of the city and home to a fair number of pubs and eateries. Learn about the history of one of Aberdeen's oldest pubs. A second tasting with international flavor will be enjoyed here. Next, in front of Marischal College is the statue of Robert the Bruce holding a charter for the city of Aberdeen. At this stop, you'll learn more about how the city evolved and the coat of arms. A further tasting of locally made produce and a toast to the Scottish King in recognition of his status. Rounding the tour off is a tasting of locally produced beer, wine, or gin at one of the region's fine local pubs/producers in the city center.

I really enjoyed this evening tour. Jacqueline pointed out buildings dating to the 16th century which were tucked away down narrow side streets which I wouldn't normally have noticed. She also explained how the city was established and Union Street constructed in 1801. She also showed us interesting black and white aerial photos of the splendid Marischal College which showed a large quad of manicured lawns in the interior, not visible from the outside at ground level. Jacqueline took us to places for food tasting including delicious cullen skink and she also had prepared for us homemade oatcakes. Cocktails at a bar to finish. A great evening out, educational and also fun.
