3. From Krakow: Auschwitz-Birkenau Guided Day Tour
Visit the Auschwitz Birkenau Museum and learn about the history of the former Nazi camp. Your professional guide will give you commentary throughout the tour so you leave as informed as possible.
This is a full-day excursion (7-8 hours), visiting the well-maintained Auschwitz camp which became a memorial museum with expositions. The second part is a vast camp – Birkenau, situated just outside the city of Oswiecim.
Your English-speaking driver will pick you up from one of the chosen locations in the city center of Krakow. With a comfortable air-conditioned bus, you will drive to the city of Oswiecim. The ride will take about 1,5 hours.
After arrival at the museum ground, you will meet your official museum guide, who will introduce you to the rules which must be followed. If you carry a bigger backpack than the A4 paper format, please leave it on the bus, as a backpack is not permitted inside the Auschwitz 1 museum.
After crossing security gates, those similar to the airport ones, you will receive headphones and a receiver set, which will help you to hear more clearly the guide’s stories who will speak to the microphone. The first part of sightseeing should take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
The first steps begin at the well-known gate with “Arbeit Macht Frei” writing. The place was a work camp in the past and the prisoners were forced to do a destructive job. The route leads through the important places which show the daily life of prisoners, work, selection, and extermination.
Each barrack is an original exhibition made up of belongings left by prisoners The combination of these items with the guide’s appalling stories helps you see through your own eyes what really happened here, and why we can’t remain indifferently to this place.
The last stop during the first part of the sightseeing is the gas chamber and the place where prisoners’ corpses were burnt.
After finishing the first part of Auschwitz sightseeing there will be a short 15 minutes break. It’s possible to use the toilet or have a snack or drink in a museum restaurant.
After the break, we will hop on our bus and depart to Auschwitz II Birkenau camp which is located just 10 minute's drive outside the city.
When you arrive at the parking, our driver will show you the way to the former camp where the museum guide (that you already know) will be waiting for you. The visit to the Birkenau camp will take around 1 hour.
Auschwitz II Birkenau is a vast open-space camp that shows the size of the murder committed here. You will see the field with many barracks, gas chambers, and crematoriums fenced with a barbed wire. Thousands of people were murdered in this place.
Wear comfortable shoes as you will walk around 1km around the camp. You can also have your backpack during the visit to Birkenau camp.
After finishing the tour, our driver will wait for you in the parking, the same place where you arrived. You’ll have a short break and then depart to Krakow city center.
