The Residenz in the heart of Munich was the city palace, once the seat of the Dukes, Princes, and Kings of Bavaria. The extensive complex is the largest city palace in Germany and contains some of the most lavish interiors in Europe. With its art collections and treasury, it is without a doubt the most important cultural site in all of Bavaria. A particular highlight awaits you every Saturday and Thursday in the Munich Residenz. The Residenz Soloists, together with members of the Munich Philharmonic, give a concert in the Hofkapelle where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself once played. The concert program is changed weekly and offers masterpieces of the Baroque and Classical periods by Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Haydn, and works produced by Mozart as a guest composer at the Bavarian court.

Start with the salt mines and take a breathtaking ride from the city of Salzburg into the Bavarian Alps along the Kings Lake-Ache passing the Obersalzberg, where the second headquarters of the Third Reich used to be.  Afterwards, the tour continues to its highlight – the 490 year old salt mines at Berchtesgaden. Slip into traditional miners’ clothes and take the miners’ train deep into the mountain. The enormous success of The Sound of Music Broadway Musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein premiering in 1959 caused film director Robert Wise and 250 crew members to turn Salzburg and its surroundings into the Sound of Music film location in 1964.   Right after release, the film became a tremendous success, awarded with 5 Oscars, becoming the highest grossing movie ever and reaching cult status over the years. Both the musical and film are based on the "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" written by Maria von Trapp in 1949.  Do follow the traces of the Trapp family and take a tour through Salzburg and its surroundings. Visit all of the original film sets and just imagine being Julie Andrews, the main character in the film, playing Maria von Trapp. Learn about the historical and architectural landmarks of Salzburg as well as the Lake District while enjoying the highlights of the movie. Experience a concert by the Residenz soloists in one of the most beautiful and important Rococo theaters in Europe where Mozart’s Idomeneo was premiered and where Napoleon was a guest for a performance of Don Giovanni in 1806. The ensemble, consisting of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, performs selected masterpieces of classical music, leaving long-lasting impressions and wonderful memories for the audience.

The best things come in small packages! With wonderful stucco works and crystal chandeliers inside, Max's Joseph Hall is for many a small pearl in the residence and forms the perfect frame for classical concerts. Live chamber music also helps animate the intimate character of the space. The Munich Residence served as the seat of government and residence of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918. What began in 1385 as a castle in the north-eastern corner of the city (the Neuveste, or new citadel), was transformed by rulers over the centuries into a magnificent palace, its buildings and gardens extending further and further into the town. The rooms and art collections span a period that begins with the Renaissance, and continues via the early Baroque and Rococo epochs to Neoclassicism. Here you can bear witness to the discriminating taste and the political ambition of the Wittelsbach dynasty.

The Baroque Court Chapel of the Wittelsbach family was once the wedding chapel of Ludwig I. It is one of the jewels of the Munich Residenz. Here Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed frequently with his early piano concertos and the Missa brevis. The Court Chapel itself is primarily known for its wonderful acoustics. Experience a special evening concert devoted to famous artists of classical music. The concert features masterpieces by Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, and Bach in the impressive Hercules Hall of the Munich Residenz. The Hercules Hall was originally the throne room of Louis I and was built after the reconstruction as a concert hall. It served as a substitute for Klenze’s destroyed Odeon and was the most important concert hall in Munich up until the opening of the Philharmonic Hall in Gasteig. It got its name from the tapestries on the wall that depict the legend of Hercules and were commissioned by Albrecht V in 1556. With a new concert series, the renowned "Residenz Soloists" want to offer a stage in the cultural capital of Munich to the young, international rising stars of symphony. The high point of the evening is the Royal Water Music in the salon on the main deck of MS Starnberg, a luxurious concert hall with exceptional acoustics. The Residence Soloists and members of the Munich Philharmonic will play masterpieces by Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart and others. Traditionally, on such royal occasions, a hunt would take place: the quarry would be driven out of the woods into the lake for the courtly company to shoot at. Such entertainment cannot, unfortunately, be provided; but you are sure to enjoy the exciting tales of the Bavarian Kingdom, told by cultural historians on board. After this a 3 course dinner including drinks and a champagne reception awaits you. The first course includes canapés, shrimps in potato jackets, a selection of bruschette, Parma ham and antipasti satays, and smoked salmon tartlets. The main course is of pork medallions and turkey steak in Calvados sauce with potato gratin and seasonal vegetables. For pudding you will be served dark and white chocolate mousses with forest berries. The festive music, the thrilling courtly tales, and the delicious 3 course dinner afterwards make this voyage on the Starnberg Lake a glorious and unforgettable event.
