Bergamo: Private Upper Town Walking Tour w/ a Guide

1. Bergamo: Private Upper Town Walking Tour w/ a Guide

Join this 2.5-hour guided tour of downtown Bergamo and discover the beautiful Upper Town, surrounded by Venetian walls built in the 16th-century. The tour will start from Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe - from there, you'll walk following your local guide through medieval streets that have maintained their ancient charm until you reach the Rocca Castle. In the past, the Rocca represented a defensive structure for the city, but today it's just a wonderful spot from which you can enjoy an unexpected view on the Lower Town and the neighboring valleys. The walk will continue towards Piazza Vecchia, the heart of the Upper Town, surrounded by ancient communal palaces and the imposing civic tower. Once you enter Piazza Duomo, you'll be fascinated by the majestic and unique Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a real jewel of Romanesque art. There, you'll also see the cathedral, the Baptistery and the Colleoni Chapel, an outstanding Renaissance building. Walk along Via Corsarola, the main street of the Upper Town, and enjoy the lively atmosphere created by the old and modern shops, restaurants and coffee houses. To end the tour, your guide will take you to see the Cittadella, built by the Visconti family back in the 14th-century. Admire its timeless charm, while you notice the important museums all around you, until you arrive to the Colle Aperto. Just one tip: you might want to bring your camera along.

Bergamo: 2.5-Hour Private Lower Town Walking Tour w/ Guide

2. Bergamo: 2.5-Hour Private Lower Town Walking Tour w/ Guide

Join this 2.5-hour guided tour of downtown Bergamo and discover the Lower Town, the modern center of Bergamo. Starting from the train station, you'll walk along the main alley that was laid out in the middle of the 19th-century and which marks - for the city - the transition into the modern age. Follow your local guide until you arrive to Porta Nuova - from here, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the superb skyline of the Upper Town. This is where the heart of the Lower Town begins. Let's cross the "Sentierone," that represents the favorite promenade of the Bergamask people, and walk towards the Torre dei Caduti. If you're passionate about history and the terrible World War II, have a look at this tower - it represents the splendid monument created by the sculptor Giacomo Manzù in honor of Italy’s partisans. Continue your tour and don't forget to take a look at the fascinating and mysterious ancient cloister of Santa Marta. Your walk will end through the attractive shops, boutiques and restaurants of the Lower Town, where you can't skip a taste of the famous “polenta e osei,” the typical Bergamask dessert. Just one tip: you might want to bring your camera along.
