חובה לכל אדם המבקר בברלין לקפות לשעתיים למוזיאון הבונקר תחת הסיסמא: HOW IT COULD HAPPREND?

It’s a great museum! Definitely recommend visiting it first when you come to Berlin to get a better understanding of the city. There’s the option to read the signs which would take you couple of hours, but if you’re in a rush or just want to save time, you could just listen the compressed version on the audio thing with the headphones. The staff is also really friendly and helpful. They also have a cool souvenir shop.

The Nazi era is a hellishly difficult period to get to grips with but, boy, this exhibition does not shy away from it. It’s a fascinating, forensically detailed journey to explore the question ‘how could it happen here?’ It takes place over three floors of a wartime bomb-bunker which, at the height of the Battle for Berlin, was packed with people standing five to a square metre as the bombs rained down. A light morning’s sightseeing it is not, but it is essential viewing for anyone dismissive of the dangers of a right wing resurgence. The parallels between the thirties and modern geopolitics are quite stark at times. We brought our 13 year-olds, and some of it was hard-going for them but ultimately, with a bit of parental counselling, very worthwhile.
