Mauritius: Tamarind Falls Guided Hike with Swim and Lunch

3. Mauritius: Tamarind Falls Guided Hike with Swim and Lunch

The 7 Cascades or Tamarind Falls as it is known is located in the district of Black River Gorge near to the village of Henrietta. The source of the waterfalls starts from the Tamarind River and consists of at least 7 simultaneous splendid waterfalls. The surrounding area is renowned for its breathtaking nature as it is filled with exotic and indigenous plants, trees and beautiful species of birds making it a sought after destination for any nature lover or adventurer’s bucket list. Undoubtedly the only way to thoroughly enjoy and discover this hidden gem in the middle of Mauritius is with an experienced guide on our 5 to 6 hour hike. After a short safety briefing and introduction, head off along the trail for about 40 minutes until reaching the first part of the Tamarind Falls canyon. As you embark on this great adventure of canyoning and hiking you begin to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life as you become overwhelmed by this beautiful scenery. The distance between the first and second plateau is short and can only be reached by a steep descent. This is where you will have your first opportunity to jump from the waterfall into the basin below, a drop of about seven meters, but still the fastest way to get down to the next plateau !! For non jumpers, don’t worry! You can climb down a path to reach the plateau and still enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool, clear water. On arrival at the fifth waterfall, there are two ways to get down. The first way is a five-meter jump into the water-filled basin below or you can climb down taking advantage of the nearby trees and branches that create a natural ladder. Of course, if you choose the second option our skilled guide will be by your side at all times to guarantee your safety and guide you. This is one of the main reasons why it’s important to have an experienced guide with you. If you feel the urge to cool off after climbing down, you can still take a relaxing swim in the lagoon type basin at the bottom of the fifth waterfall. At the end of this adventure and reaching the goal of standing on top of the seventh waterfall a sense of achievement overwhelms you as it sets the scene for a superb view over the lush green canyon. A chance to look back at the terrain you’ve covered from the first waterfall, it also puts into perspective how high these magnificent waterfalls really are. From the top of the seventh waterfall to its basin there is approximately a 60 meter drop, so for those thrill-seekers who aren’t afraid of heights and want to take a closer look, it’s wise to lie on your stomach just near the edge of the waterfall. The 7 Cascades is truly worth a visit!

What people are saying about Black River

We have just returned home from a fantastic Holiday in Mauritius, we booked with get our guide and received Kevin from Horazis. Kevin and the dog Ben were fantastic guides, Absolutely brilliant. We spent 5 hours hiking through the rain forest to various waterfall locations. Kevin looked after us every step of the way with Ben following on behind. He talked us History, native and non native trees and plants, he made sure we were OK every step of the way. We went as a family with two children 10 & 11 and Kevin made it fun and enjoyably for all of us, he took photos we will always have to remember, he offered wild swimming at stops, He made us a very tasty lunch, we saw a section of Mauritius not many tourists see. If we had time we would have hired Kevin again, on our return to Mauritius we will be booking Kevin again for another guided tour.

Today we were first with Roman at the dolphins, and after 5 minutes we were able to admire the first ones, just beautiful, then we continued with Petra, we skipped breakfast and went to a small local street food snack bar.. .. very very tasty, the rest of the tour was also super informative and we always had enough time to walk around and take pictures ourselves... Petra gave us great tips from which side the photos are best, she explained everything to us answered all questions very carefully and really took his time. We can only recommend this tour with Petra ... many thanks for everything Petra .... and of course many thanks also to Roman.

Great tour. Everything well organized. Were assigned to a boat immediately after arrival and then it started. Our two skippers did really well. They told and explained a lot and you can tell that this provider clearly pays attention to the welfare of the animals. Unfortunately, there are also other boats out there that you can tell don't show that much consideration. We were lucky enough to encounter the humpback whales right at the beginning of the day. Just breathtaking. Then it was on to the dolphins. Also here just incredible. The moment in the water with the dolphins is something very special. We can only recommend the tour.

A beautiful experience with two super friendly and funny guides. Attention was paid to everyone's safety and wishes were taken into account, at the same time care was taken to ensure that this experience did not end as a hunt for the animals. A very, very great experience!

We got to swim with dolphins which was amazing and then our guide took us to see all of the best attractions in the south and south west of the island. The guide was so informative and absolutely lovely!!
