Bolzano: Historical City Center Guided Walking Tour

1. Bolzano: Historical City Center Guided Walking Tour

Your excursion will begin in Walther Square, a square which was completed in 1808 by order of King Massimiliano di Baviera, and initially named after him. At the same square, you will admire the Cathedral of Bolzano, and the Romanesque Basilica (1180), which was completed around 1420 in a Gothic style of the Suevian mastery. The bell tower, which stands 65-meters tall, was built by the Suevian architect Hans Lutz von Schusseried between 1501 and 1519. Next up on your tour is the Dominican Church, a complex comprising a convent, a large nave with different chapels, and a magnificent cloister. The jewel of the entire complex is Cappella di San Giovanni, a long and narrow sided chapel with the most magnificent fresco cycle of the Giotto School in the province. You will continue your walk through the Goethe Street and Piazza delle Erbe, a colorful and lively piazza and the heart of the city center. You will then walk through Museum Street, before crossing the Talvera Bridge where you will find yourselves in front of the imposing structure of the Victory Monument, Monumento alla Vittoria (1926-1928). Towards the end of your tour, you will stop by Piazza del Municipio (Town Hall Square), before walking up to the Piazza del Grano (Grain Square), where you will find the Vicolo della Pesa, one of the oldest places in Bolzano. La Casa Della Pesa, one of the most picturesque buildings of the city, is also situated to the north of this square.
