Always along the Panke - bike tour

4. Always along the Panke - bike tour

On our three-hour bike tour we follow the course of the river from the stony centre of Berlin to the green Karow on the outskirts of the city. When you think of rivers in Berlin, most people only think of the Spree and Havel. The third river, the Panke, which flows into the Spree not far from the Berliner Ensemble, is less well known. The course of the river in Berlin-Mitte has been built over and is only visible in a few places. We find the riverbed on the grounds of the Charité hospital, the Federal Ministry of Transport and behind the BND. In Wedding, the river, which used to be called Stinkepanke because of the many tanneries on its banks, meanders along former industrial buildings, tram and bus workshops. The buildings are currently used by artists as studios, rehearsal rooms and art houses/stages and special concert venues. They are now called Uferstudios, Uferhalle, Ex-Rotaprint and Pianosalon. As soon as we get to Pankow it gets even greener and quieter: allotments, villas etc. and reservoirs of the river lead to the Volkspark Pankow and the Schlossgarten. A detour leads to the Majakowskiring, where GDR politicians lived in the early days of the GDR.After a flying visit to Walter Ulbricht's official residence and temporary guest house of the GDR's state guests - Schönhausen Palace - we continue along the banks of the Panke towards the northeast. Well organized and at a relaxing pace. Met at Alexander Platz and travelled by train to Potsdam approx 35min. Bikes are collected and dropped off at Potsdam station. The guide was very knowledgeable and could even answer historic questions stretching beyond the Potsdam region. The stories were a combinations of cold hard history but also light hearted facts. The bikes were a breeze to ride even for a novice like me. I would recommend a bike tour when visiting Potsdam as you are able to cover a lot of the town at a comfortable pace.

What a great day! We were a bit worried, starting out in the rain & with small children joining the tour, but Ronin kept a pace we could all enjoy. His stories were both informative and amusing! When more contextual depth was needed, he was able to provide that, too.

Very good tour, the bikes are very good and in perfect condition! The guide very friendly and accessible and very informed. explains everything very well
