  • Explore the most emblematic socialist propaganda monuments of Hungary
  • Watch an informative and interesting documentary on the former political secret service
  • Climb up to the "waving balcony" and experience what it must have felt like to be a party leader during the socialist era
Full description
Discover gigantic monuments of the communist dictatorship and learn the history of this era in Hungary. At the end of the communist era, all statutes were removed from the streets of Budapest and set up in this park as a reminder of the era. Memento Park portrays the fall of communism in a unique way. On arrival, you will see Stalin's enormous grandstand, a replica of the one that used to stand in the former Parade square where Socialist holidays were celebrated by the leaders of the party and the state. You can also learn about the historical background by exploring the photo exhibition and watching the documentary titled "The Life of an Agent." The park isn't all serious either. You can always pose for a selfie with the statue of Lenin or some Soviet Red Army soldiers.

The place is quite far away from Budapest, in the middle of nowhere, and if public transport is used, it can become quite tiresome. I recommend a guide to explain the history of these statues and decent weather, summer with super hot temperatures is not the best time, as the place is out in the open. Otherwise the statues are impressive.

Powerfully preserved problematic past.

The Hungarians know how to honor and present their past, even the most difficult of history. I recomemd a viset to the House of Horror before coming to see the statues, and do not miss the film in the shed, creepy and informative. But if it is hot, leave the elderly at home, there is no shade or breez.

I was expecting something more. The video is very interesting, but the visit to the statues remains somewhat decontextualized: in front of each work, larger and more detailed captions would be useful than the simple name of the author and the work. Ultimately, the museum needs greater interactivity and the use of new technologies. One last note: at the entrance the QR code of the Get Your Guide voucher has not even been scanned and the bus stop from Google Maps does not correspond to that of the visual sign, so ask the driver where to get off.
