From Athens: Ancient Corinth & Daphni Monastery

1. From Athens: Ancient Corinth & Daphni Monastery

After your morning pick-up from your centrally located hotel, the bus will drive to Corinth via Iera Odos (the Sacred Way). It was so-called this because it was the route taken by a procession celebrating the Eleusinian Mysteries. Initiations were held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based in Eleusis. Your first stop will be the Monastery of Daphni, a 11th-century Byzantine monastery listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Monasteries Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni of Chios. The interior of the church is decorated with superb mosaics, a unique, fine example of the classical idealism of Middle Byzantine art. The crowded scenes of the mosaics narrate scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin.  Driving along the coastal road, reach Corinth Canal, which merges the Aegean with the Ionian Sea (short stop for photos of the breathtaking view). Shortly thereafter, reach the ancient town of Corinth, where St. Paul lived and preached for two years (Acts 18:1-18). Visit the ruins of the ancient city where Paul worked with Aquila and Priscilla, see the remains of the first century shops, the agora where Paul’s trial by Gallio took place, the Fountain of Peirene and one of the most outstanding monuments of the pre–Roman period, the Temple of Apollo.

The canal is a long and narrow stretch of water that runs through Corinth, linking the Gulf of Corinth on the North to its outlet in the Saronic Gulf on the south. The canal is unique because it cuts through the Greek mainland to allow ships to pass from the Atlantic Ocean on one side to the Mediterranean Sea on the other side. Today, you will be able to see some of these impressive engineering accomplishments in action. After you are back in Athens you're going to experience the ancient sites and hundreds of museums, including the iconic Parthenon as well as lesser-known treasures like Byzantine-era churches and monasteries. A visit to Athens is not complete without a walk through the beautiful Ancient Agora. Spend time at one of Athens’ most famous sites, where Socrates taught and Plato debated, before heading across the ancient city walls to see the remains of another highlight: the Temple of Hephaestus, which was built in the fourth century BC and is today a ruin. Then it’s on to the bustling central square of Plaka, with its many shops and restaurants. Here, you can stroll through Old Athens—the quarter where Socrates lived and drank his famous hemlock cocktail with friends before dying around 399 BC. Your next stop is the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the most important religious monument in Athens. The site, originally a temple dedicated to the Phoenician god Baal, was constructed on top of an earlier temple built in about BC 675. Excavations have revealed various artifacts from this period including friezes and sculptures depicting fertility-related themes. You'll need at least 3 -4 hours to visit the ruins and explore them fully. After the tour, your private driver will take you back to your hotel. This was an outstanding tour, covering so many classical places in Greece. Starting in Athens..briefly stopping at the Corinth Canal, before proceeding to Epidaurus, Nafplio and Mycenae. Extensive tours of the archaeological sites of Olympia and Delphi, with ample time to appreciate both sites. The final day was spent in Meteora, where we toured two monasteries of the six that were built in the 13 and 14 century. There were many places that unfortunately we did not have time to stop at, but at least we did get to see them and hear about them.

An amazing trip! Efi, our guide, was very knowledgeable about every stop and spot and we got to see so so much. The only downside is that the lunch stops, while nice, were at one specific spot picked out instead of free time to find a place in the towns, and that these stops were more tourist priced than most of Greece. Otherwise a truly amazing tour that goves you so much value, history, and appreciation of Greek history.

My friend and I had an amazing time during this tour! Our guide was very knowledgeable, providing interesting and valuable information and our driver was kind and helpful! Very well organized tour! Thank you PRIVATE Tours Greece!

A great half-day trip out of Athens. The guide was very knowledgeable and provided maps and photos to enhance the experience. The bus was very clean and transportation was smooth.
