From Inverness: Glen Affric, Culloden and Clava Cairns Tour

1. From Inverness: Glen Affric, Culloden and Clava Cairns Tour

Leaving Inverness in the morning, this full-day tour begins with a trip to the ancient burial site of Clava Cairns. This Bronze-Age graveyard has survived four millennia, and is a great spot to take atmospheric photos. The location was perhaps the inspiration for the Craigh na Dun time portal in the Outlander books. Afterwards, you’ll head to Culloden, one of the most important sites in Scottish history. It was here that a 60-year series of uprisings finally ended in a tumultuous battle in 1745. Explore the visitor center and pay tribute to those who lost their lives at the last ever battle fought on British soil. Continue to Glen Affric and stop to walk among the indigenous Caledonian pine trees. Enjoy views over Loch Affric and the mountains beyond, with your expert guide taking you to the best waterfalls and photo spots. Afterwards, explore the historic ruins of Beauly Priory, a monastery dating back to the 13th century. To cap things off, you’ll head to the shores of Loch Ness, before ending up back in the center of Inverness in the early evening.

What people are saying about Culloden Moor

I was in Inverness for only three nighs and I had only one day for a longer tour - and I'm extremely happy I got this one! I'm a fan of Outlander and an astronomer interested in ancient sites, so I just had to visit the Clava Cairns standing stones. This tour worked out perfectly for me because I didn't want to go on a full Outlander tour, but I did want to see the Culloden battlefield, so this tour was perfectly balanced in that regard. Our tour guide Stuart (sorry if I got the spelling wrong) made the whole tour even more amazing than expected. The entire time he was telling us wonderful stories about the things we were about to see or Scotland and Inverness in general. He's an Inverness native, so his wonderful stories gave us a chance to have the true Scottish experience. That combined with his great Scottish humour, every moment of the tour was exciting and fun, and we even got to learn a lot about Scotland.

The tour was amazing!! Clava Cairns is really mystical, Culloden taught us a lot and left us moved, Glenn Affric views were breathtaking. But what made this trip really super was Amy. She's extremely knowledgeable, very funny and always kind. She made our experience unforgettable. Best tour in the highlands we had this year!

Amy was our guide & she made the trip memorable & enjoyable. Her explanation & interpretation of Scotland’s complicated history was informative & helpful. She welcomed all of us & entertained our questions. Loved the music she played to help explain parts of history & her outgoing personality. She made Culloden fun!

Kev was a great guide. English is not our first language but Lev was still very clear and understandable. We saw incredible places and the truth is that this experience is well worth it. It was very cold, so you have to be prepared for the weather, but it was totally worth it.

Kev was a great companion. We really appreciated that we had enough time at each stop. This was not just a bus trip photo tour. We could actually hike in nature and got enough time to explore Culloden museum to soak up the history.
