Experience

Highlights
  • See Doune Castle, the filming location for Outlander, Game of Thrones, and Monty Python & the Holy Grail
  • Admire views of Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle
  • Explore the beautiful loch-side town of Inverary
  • Visit Luss on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
Full description
Our first stop is Doune - a well preserved 14th century castle, set amid the lovely Stirlingshire countryside. Here you can take an audio tour of the Castle* narrated by Monty Python's Terry Jones and hear the exciting history of the medieval castle and it's residents. Doune Castle is the atmospheric stand-in for the fictional Castle Leoch in the TV show Outlander and can also be seen as a film location in Game of Thrones. We then journey north passing lochs and mountains before stopping at Kilchurn Castle set on the banks of Loch Awe; this is one of the most photographed Castles in Scotland and often seen in Calendars Our next stop is Inverary, where your driver will give you a tour of the picturesque town and you will have plenty of time to enjoy lunch, and perhaps visit the jail* or castle* (featured in Downtown Abbey) Leaving Inverary, you can enjoy views of Loch Fyne, famous for its seafood, before heading over the mountains with a brief photograph stop at the top of the Rest & Be Thankful Pass. We then stop in the village of Luss, located on the banks of Loch Lomond before returning back to Edinburgh via Stirling with views of Stirling Castle. *optional extra, admission charge payable ****Please Note - Doune Castle is currently closed and only outside access is currently available**

We did the tour in October 2019 and we were two couples. It was a great trip to the Scottish Highlands and we were able to get a lasting impression of the nature reserve! Our guide Jamie (James) had many funny sayings and interesting facts as well as tips and recommendations in stock. Communication with the local agency (GrayLine) was uncomplicated and courteous! We were booked a taxi to Musselburgh at no extra charge; which brought us to the downtown pickup location. After further (approx. 5) short stops to pick up other excursion participants, the tour began. We were about 10 people in a bus for 45 people or similar - the atmosphere was very good. Doun Castle not really worth seeing as there isn't much being built. It was also well attended and quite narrow in the narrow aisles. We would not see this castle a second time, in contrast to Inverary Castle - very worthwhile!

Great tour!

"Gray Line Graham", our guide, was great. In addition to the perfectly organized pick-up service, he brought us the highlights of the tour in an exciting way with a lot of humor, a very good knowledge of history and many other interesting stories. Numerous extra photo stops with enough time to explore the respective events (those who love castles will get their money's worth here!) Have made this tour a real experience. Anytime again and a big thank you to "Gray-Line-Graham"!
