The Elblag Canal, also called the Elblag-Ostroda Canal, is a 150-years-old canal in Poland that runs from Elblag to Ostroda. At over 80 km in length, it is the longest navigable canal still in use in Poland. It is also one of the most interesting canals in Europe. Elblag Canal’s uniqueness arises from its peculiar choice of engineering to tackle a particularly difficult section of the route where the water level rises by 100 meters. This particular section is located between Druzno Lake and Piniewo Lake, a distance of about 10 km. Because the difference in height was too large, it was impractical to build traditional locks. Instead, an ingenious system of inclined planes was employed where the boats are lifted out of the water and placed into tracks and dragged across dry lands. Even though other Polish cities were attacked a few minutes earlier than Westerplatte, this place is the symbol for the beginning of the Second World War. Here 200 Polish soldiers heroically fought the Nazis which outnumbered them by 8 times. Nowadays in Westerplatte you can see the remaining Guardhouse No.1 and the remains of a barracks. The whole area is quite small so you will walk though it. You will see a small military cemetery and a huge Monument to the defenders of the Polish Coast. A large monument pays tribute to those Polish defenders and marks the spot where the entire world was plunged into war just 60 years ago. The Westerplatte tour is offered in 2 options: Standard option: First you will be picked up from your hotel in Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot. Alternative option (cruise): You are going to meet your private guide near the Golden Gate in Gdansk.
