It is under the protection of UNESCO and considered a World Heritage site due to its unique architecture. Visit Berat Castle and the Onufri Museum. The Berat castle is of particular interest because people still live within its walls in their traditional houses, just like their ancestors did for centuries. Explore this fortress overlooking the town of Berat and its many Byzantine churches. The castle used to have over 40 churches of which 7 still remain today, including the Church of the Dormition of St Mary. Travel to Berat in the morning at 08:30. Once you get to the city, you will learn that it was invaded three times by Ottomans, Romans and Bulgarians and then became a big principality under the rule of the Albanian noble family of Muzaka in the 14th century. Your will walk on well preserved cobblestone streets. Explore the Onufri Museum inside of the Cathedral of the Saint Mary Assumption (18th century) and admire the icons of the mysterious work of the Onufri painter. Visit the castle, one the most marvelous sights of the city and one of the biggest inhabited castles with many Byzantine churches, as well as some mosques built under the Ottoman era which began in 1417. You will leave at 8:30 in the morning on foot from Rruga Mihal Komnena to go through the city center, where you will have the opportunity to see the Orthodox churches and mosques which are right next to each other. Berat is one of the cities of Albania where there is no need to talk about tolerance between cultures and religions. For centuries, the Christian Orthodox community has coexisted with the Muslim community showing signs of harmony and brotherhood. Going through the famous Mangalem and Gorica districts, crossing the ancient Gorica bridge you will notice that this city has its characteristic stone houses. Once you reach the top of Gorica, you will stop to enjoy the panoramic view. You will return from the opposite side of the hill so you will enjoy a privileged point of view of the surrounding valleys, where oil and wine are produced.
