We enjoy a stop at Góðafoss water, where the water falls in a 30m wide semi circle. The contrast between the foaming angry falls and the black volcanic rock is really striking to behold. Góðafoss, or waterfalls of the gods, symbolises the switch from worshiping the pagan gods and following Christianity. We explore the remarkable pseudo craters that border lake Mývatn. These numerous grassy knolls are not as they may appear volcanic craters. No lava spewed or flowed for them. Rather they were formed when lava flowed into the wetlands bordering the of the lake. The meeting of boiling magma and the waters of the lake resulted in steam explosion in the ground here, giving them their crater shape. We enjoy a walk through Dimmuborgir lava fields and admire the distinct and strange formations of lava rock. It is common in Iceland for children to see troll-like shapes in lava rock. Námaskarð is a barren landscape scarred by boiling geothermal water with mud pools. Experience the strong smell of sulfur which hangs in the air here but be sure to stick to the marked walking paths. After this wonderful day exploring Mývatn, we return to Akureyri and drop you to the same place you started the tour in the morning. Lake Myvatn Classic tour travels through some of the most spectacular and unique landscapes in Iceland. Ending the day at the Myvatn Nature Baths where you can enjoy a relaxing soak in the geothermal waters. A day at Lake Myvatn is a day to remember. The tour departs from Akureyri. The first stop gives you the best views over Akureyri and Eyjafjörður. After a short photo stop we drive on to Goðafoss waterfall. One of Iceland´s most beautiful and uniquely shaped waterfalls. Here we tell you why the falls are important in Icelandic history and give you enough time to explore the area close up. Then we head on to Myvatn. We stop at the pseudo craters for a short while before continuing on to Dimmuborgir. Dimmuborgir is a unique and very interesting area. Visitors are given time to walk among the unusual lava sculptures, pillars and caves. Our guides know everything about this area and will be happy to walk with you and explain how the area was created 2,500 years ago, as well as tell you a few folktales about the local trolls. After a lunch break overlooking Dimmuborgir, we visit the former nature baths located on the tectonic plates between Europe and America. The last volcanic eruption in Myvatn was in 1984 from the volcano Krafla and lava from this eruption is visible everywhere you look. Hverir is an area of bubbling sulphur mud pits and steaming vents, watch your step as you explore this unique area! The Myvatn Nature Baths is our final stop and we recommend you enjoy this optional extra. The geothermal waters are the perfect place to relax before driving back to Akureyri. During the winter months the frost, low lying sun and often snow add something extra to this amazing tour of Myvatn.

Benefit from pick-up from your cruise ship in Akureyri Port, and then drive to Lake Mývatn and the surrounding wetlands area near Krafla volcano. Come with us on an unforgettable journey where we start by enjoying the amazing waterfall Goðafoss with its beauty and great history, from there we continue to the wonderful lake Mývatn with its rough volcanic environment, rich bird life and flora. There we will stop at Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá and Hverir. First we will drive past Skútustaðagígar a cluster of very unique volcanic land formations (pseudo crater) which got formed during a eruption in the area. This type of land formations have only been found in four places on the planet and then a few on the planet Mars. Dimmuborgir (Dark castle) is a unusually dark and rough lava field which contains many strange formations and lava caves such as Gatklettur the “Holly cliff”. Next we go and explore the nice small lava cave Grjótagjá with a geothermal spring inside which was used as a bathing place for a long time. Hverir has countless of boiling hot mud springs and steam vents in widely different colors. After leaving Mývatn we will continue to the great and powerful waterfall Dettifoss which is located in the Vatnajökull National Park, and it’s reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. Dettifoss is over 100 meters wide and drops 45 meters down into the gorge Jökulsárgljúfur. We will then take a better look at Jökulsárgljúfur which is the largest gorge in all of Iceland with a span up to 500 meters and a depth of 120 meters before heading back to Akureyri. We bet that you have never felt so small against Mother Nature before. During winter time it can be expected that the road to Dettifoss is impassable for normal cars, then our Super Jeeps come in handy.

A great tour around the lake Mývatn area where we see how the power of nature has formed the country and how it's still working beneath our feet. We explore beautiful spots and enjoy the stunning scenery along the way. We start our tour in Akureyri and drive east towards the beautiful Goðafoss waterfall, where we'll make our first stop. The waterfall is a place of significant historic value connected with when Icelanders took Christianity. We continue east from Goðafoss; we'll pass through the valley of Reykjadalur and head to Skútustaðir, where we see the pseudocraters. Our next stop is the stunning lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Dimmuborgir were formed about 2300 years ago when a partly cooled lava lake drained out and left magnificent basalt pillars and sculptures. After a short walk in Dimmuborgir, we'll travel to Grjótagjá, which was a popular underground bathing cave until the volcanic eruptions at Krafla 1975-1984. Those eruptions heated the water in the cave, so now it's too hot to bathe there. We now continue through the Námaskarð pass and go to the Hverarönd fumarole fields, a spectacular area showing the earth's inner power. After this, we'll be heading back towards Akureyri; if time, weather and conditions allow, we'll find some good places to stop for pictures
