Copenhagen: Roskilde, Frederiksborg & Kronborg Day Tour

1. Copenhagen: Roskilde, Frederiksborg & Kronborg Day Tour

Enjoy a scenic sightseeing tour of North Sealand on an 8.5-hour excursion from Copenhagen, and visit the royal monuments of Kronborg Castle and Frederiksborg Castle and the World Heritage site of Roskilde Cathedral. Ideal for those who want to explore further than the city center to see as much as possible of historic Denmark, but are short of time, you will travel in a small group for a more personalized experience. The tour includes time to explore the imposing exteriors and interiors of Frederiksborg and Kronborg castles, the latter set on the banks of the Sund between Denmark and Sweden, and most notable as the site of Elsinore in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Soak up the romantic setting of Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, surrounded by a beautiful lake and gardens. The guide will take you to Roskilde to visit Roskilde Cathedral, the burial site of 39 Danish kings and queens, including Ingrid of Sweden, spouse of Denmark’s Frederick IX, father of the current Queen Margrethe II. The last stop on your tour will be the Viking Ship Museum to see rebuilt models and excavated ships from the days when the Vikings rampaged their way - and conquered - much of Western Europe and the North Atlantic. Please note, that between November and March and most of April, the tour does not include a visit to the Cathedral's interior but rather a walk around the impressive structure and an introduction to the Cathedral's place in history.

This was a great way to get a lot of history and culture of Denmark in one package. Starting with the convenience of a hotel pick up, an informative information card on the bus and great narrative along the way. We set off to Roskilde church where 39 of the reigning Kings and Queens of Denmark are laid to rest, then the Viking Museum to see 5 fully constructed Viking ships based on the assembled 300 year old remains of the original ships. Then to a great lunch cafe with open face sandwiches as well as burgers and other fare. Then walk to the fabulous Fredriksborg Castle featuring images in the paintings that follow you around, to magnificent rooms and furniture and the oldest elevator in Denmark. Then to Kronberg castle to see where Denmark was defended from the Swedes and preserved to exist today with the oldest functioning cannon gunnery. It is a full day from 9 to 6 but we'll worth it. It is a tight schedule and not one for lingering in the gift shops. Highly recommend this trip.
