Full description

Tour the 100 square mile island of Martha's Vineyard and hear the charming history of its 6 towns from a local guide. As you drive across the picturesque island, admire curiosities like America's oldest carousel and the cliffs of Aquinnah.

Start in Oak Bluffs, known for its distinctive Victorian architecture with 300 colorful cottages designed to look like gingerbread houses. Turn a corner and see "The Flying Horse Carousel," America’s oldest carousel, operating since 1876.

Continue to Edgartown, with its quaint harbor complete with an 80-year-old lighthouse. A former hub for the whaling industry, admire the stately Greek revival mansions built by ship captains.

Travel along the idyllic countryside and small fishing villages before stopping for some clam chowder or lobster bisque in Menemsha. Next, arrive at the technicolor cliffs of Aquinnah before swinging by the bridge made famous in the movie Jaws.

There were 10 or 11 of us in a van with a driver who had lived for many years on the Vineyard. He was very knowledgeable about history and current conditions, and kept talking continuously for the whole 3 hours. We learned a lot, and I was impressed by how well-managed Martha's Vineyard has been since the first settlers arrived. There is a lot to see, and three hours is not much time. We stopped only once, for 20 minutes, at the Gay Head cliffs. A second stop in Edgartown was promised but not delivered, owing to traffic - but this was a Tuesday, so it is unlikely that traffic would be much lighter any other day. There was very little conversation in the van, possibly because we were all masked. So, not surprisingly, it was basically sitting in a bus for 3 hours and looking out the window, with one bathroom break. Overall, we were glad to have done the tour. With what we know now, we will be able to plan our next visit more knowledgably.

Our tour guide was absolutely wonderful. In a calm and conversational tone he provided an excellent mix of historical, architectural, economic, cultural and community details, peppered with personal stories. The info we learned exceeds what my family knows about the Island and they've vacationed on Martha's Vineyard for nearly 40 years. The van was clean and comfortable and the small group was a good fit. The total time of the tour + 2-15 minute breaks was just right. I gained such an appreciation for MV through this overview. Will definitely return to enjoy the MV life and learn more.

Rich M. Was an outstanding guide, very knowledgeable about Martha’s Vineyard, and added interesting little tidbits of information. He was interested in his guests and willingly responded to our questions. He made sure we were comfortable and went out of his way to take us closer to a rest facility. The three hour tour is very inclusive and gives you a wonderful overview of the island, helpful in deciding what to do on your own.
