Full description
Explore the protected areas of the Central Sierras of Badajoz on a full-day tour from Mérida. Hop onboard a 4x4 jeep and journey out to the Central Sierras of Badajoz with a local expert birding guide. The mountain ranges that occupy the center of the province of Badajoz are authentic “ecosystem-islands” in a highly degraded agricultural environment and boast a community of large birds of prey as the main ornithological value. Watch the birds preying at each one of the suggested observation points and walking routes. See native birds such as the Bonelli’s Eagle, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, and Griffon Vulture. Other important species, such as Short-toed Eagle, Eagle Owl, Common, and Lesser Kestrels, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, as well as those that are of more general interest like Black Kite, Booted Eagle, Common Buzzard can also be seen along the tour.   Species like the Black Wheatear, Black-Eared Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, Western Orphean, Spectacled, Dartford, and Subalpine Warblers are some of the important species in the crags of this protected area. On the wall of the dam of Alange, sightings of reasonable numbers of Alpine Swift as well as House Martins, Eurasian Jackdaws, etc. are common. Additionally, see other swift species like the Pallid and the rare White-rumped Swift. All over the year, a large group of water birds can be observed in the wetlands of the area. Winter is marked by abundant gulls, cormorants, grebes, and some waders. During the breeding period, you’ll find Gull-billed Tern, Collared Pratincole, and occasionally Whiskered Tern and Northern Lapwing. Other species enrich the community during the migration, which includes Eurasian Spoonbill or Black Tern, among others.   The territory of Iberian Lynx in Extremadura is well worth discovering, so a bird watching tour in this beautiful site should not be overlooked.
