Full description

Learn about the history of the Jewish Quarter in Prague. This experience includes visits to the Jewish Cemetery, which is one of the oldest in Central Europe, and it includes admission to 3 synagogues.

Begin with a 20-minute introduction (in English) and orientation from your guide as you hear about the history of Prague’s Jewish Quarter.

Meet with your guide at the local partner office in Maiselova street, just a few steps from the Maisel Synagogue. The guide will help you with orientation in the Jewish Town. After that, you will explore the Jewish Town on your own. Your entry ticket includes access to synagogues as well as Prague’s Jewish cemetery. You can choose between Circuit 1 or Circuit 2. Both Circuits include admission to the Old Jewish Cemetery, among the oldest in all of Central Europe. You will get a chance to visit the Spanish Synagogue, constructed in the beautiful Moorish Revival style.

Both circuits also include admission into 3 synagogues: Maisel, Pinkas, and Klausen Synagogue. The latter is the biggest in Prague Jewish Town. Moreover, you will have the chance to visit the Ceremonial Hall, and Robert Guttman Gallery, home to several temporary exhibitions. These include items from the Jewish Museum’s collections or aspects of modern Jewish life. Circuit 1 additionally contains an entrance ticket to the Old-New synagogue, one of the oldest active synagogues in all of Europe. Constructed in the Gothic style in 1270, it is one of the earliest Gothic buildings in Prague and continues to be one of the most important religious sites for Jews in the Czech Republic.

Brief presentation in French in the morning with a guide, gave me some historical information and explained everything there was to see. Afterwards, we visit alone and at our own pace, in the direction we want. Very nice visit, especially the Spanish Synagogue which is incredible. I also recommend the Jubilee / Jerusalem Synagogue, a little further and which is not part of the circuit you have to pay extra but which is really worth it. If you want to understand all the information, you may prefer a guided group tour or an audio tour. Because suddenly I missed a lot of things, the information panels are only displayed in Czech and English. But for my part I prefer visits without a group, and I found two small books on Jewish Prague and the Golem of Prague where there are many explanations.

We had a very personal tour (just the two of us) together with two Italian guests. The tour guide skilfully switched back and forth between German and Italian. Excellent! We first learned a lot about Jewish history from our guide. Afterwards we had enough time and opportunity to delve deeper into the topic. We were very impressed by the Spanish synagogue and the many historically significant exhibitions in the other synagogues. At the beginning of our tour, our guide gave us an envelope containing a map of the Jewish Quarter, a ticket to various places in the Jewish Quarter with explanations, and two vouchers. So it was possible to customize our stay and spend time accordingly.

Martin was great. He showed me the circuit and told me the history of this district. I was the only French one and it was a bit like a private guide. Do not hesitate to ask him questions. What is really great once the guide has shown us the circuit is that you have the day to see the different sites. I highly recommend this tour.
