Food and Wine Tour: World's Oldest Port Wine Cave

4. Food and Wine Tour: World's Oldest Port Wine Cave

While Porto might come to mind when you think of Portugal’s famous Port wine, it is actually produced in the region across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. This small coastal city, south of the Douro river, is lined with wine cellars and family-run restaurants serving homemade food. Most Porto visitors only get to explore the wine caves along the riverside, but we will also take you to the untapped food shops off the beaten path. Your day will begin with an espresso and traditional Pastel de Chaves (a pastry from a city northeast of Porto). We will then whisk you off for an exclusive guided tour and wine tasting at the oldest and still-functioning port wine cellar in the world. You’ll see vintage wines dating back to the 18th century and learn about the delicacy of wine tasting as you sample a wide selection of Ports. After a bit of sipping, you’ll be ready for some delicious local food! We will stop at three local neighborhood eateries where you’ll meet the owners and sample classic Portuguese dishes. Enjoy a freshly made Francesinha sandwich, as well as other local favorites paired with wine and beer produced in the region. On your way back, you will stop at Mercado Beira Rio, a local food market where you can eat and enjoy music concerts and art exhibitions. It’s the perfect authentic spot for your last wine tasting of the day.

Very nice and friendly guide who seemed to know everything about Porto. Nice if you have already seen the standard things in the city itself and want to see more of the small streets and get more background information about the buildings, street art, life in Porto, etc.
