Flavors of Lucca Food Tour with Local Guide

10. Flavors of Lucca Food Tour with Local Guide

You start your Lucca tour at the very spot that welcomes most visitors to the city: the Lucca train station. From there, you’ll head through the majestic city walls and reach the beautiful Cathedral Square, giving you your first taste of life in Lucca. But wait! To truly “taste” the city, you need to do just that and put your taste buds to work. Italians never start the day without their espresso fix, so you’ll do as the locals do and savor a cup of coffee. And because a good espresso goes best with a delicious treat, you’ll taste a traditional delicacy: Buccellato cake. You’ll be taken to a place where the secret recipe has been closely guarded since 1881. With caffeine and sugar fueling you, you’ll then head to the main shopping street of Lucca, admiring the medieval and Renaissance architecture and the signs of the old shops that testify to the city’s ancient artisan traditions: shoemakers, knife grinders, and silk merchants. But then, it’s time for more sweets as you enter the magical world of chocolate! Merchants and nobles were Lucca’s first lovers of chocolate and the tradition of chocolate-making has lasted for five centuries. You’ll taste the best selection in one of the most beautiful chocolate shops in town. Don’t worry, though, you’ll keep moving so you can walk off that chocolate stop. You’ll get to take in wonderful views from the top of the city as we wander along a part of the Renaissance walls. This pedestrian way is where locals regularly run, walk, and relax. This last stop on your Lucca tour will bring you to Roman times in the Piazza della Anfiteatro, or Amphitheatre Square, which is full of typical shops – and lunch! You’ll introduce you to some authentic food and wine, like maybe some Bazzone cured ham, Colonnata lardo, finocchiona salami, or Pecorino cheese produced in the Garfagnana mountains. To wash it all down, we’ll cheers with a glass of good local wine or artisan beer.

What people are saying about Province of Lucca

Great trip. Bikes worked beautifully on the hills near Lucca. The guide Rafael did a tremendous job with facts about the city and at the local winery. Francesco at the winery provided alot of history on his family winery and the wine was exceptional. We bought several bottles that we could enjoy on the remained of our trip in both Lucca and Venice. Highly recommend this tour to everyone!

Paola was extremely knowledgeable and kind throughout our tour and was pleasant and put us both at ease. We learned so much about Lucca and even that our apartment is located in the ancient amphitheater which I found really incredible. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Lucca and be sure to ask for Paola! Margo Brody and Deborah Adams

Excellent trip. Guide was great. Travellers who are late back to the meeting point by 15 minutes should be left behind. Pisa and Lucca were both great

Vittoria was a great tour guide. Very informative and we really enjoyed her sense of humour. Would recommend!
