From Cairo: Saqqara and Memphis Pyramids Tour

4. From Cairo: Saqqara and Memphis Pyramids Tour

Before the Great Pyramids of Giza, many Egyptian kings created vast and memorable monuments for their burial in the desert outside present-day Cairo. Visit these sites in historic Saqqara and Memphis, ancient Egyptian sites located around 18 miles south of Cairo on a shared group or private tour. Saqqara is a large and ancient burial ground that features the world's oldest standing step pyramid. Designed by Imhotep for King Djoser, the step pyramid is the oldest complete stone-hewn building complex known in history. It is surrounded by other small pyramids dating back to the 5th and 6th dynasties. Although Giza and the Valley of the Kings in Thebes eventually eclipsed Saqqara as the burial ground of royalty, Saqqara remained an important complex for burials and cult ceremonies for more than 3,000 years. You’ll continue on to Memphis, the ancient capital of Lower Egypt and of the Old Kingdom of Egypt from its foundation until around 2,200 B.C. The modern towns of Dahshur and Saqqara lie within the administrative borders of historical Memphis. Throughout the tour, your local guide will offer local insight into the culture and customs of Cairo and the surrounding area.

What people are saying about Pyramids of Giza

Had great time in Cairo. We were a family of four with two young kids. Took the Cairo by plane from Hurghada. Syed met us at the Cairo Airport, there was slight confusion in recognising him. From there we went to the Egyptian Museum and spent good two hours. Syed is very knowledgable and explained the important exhibits and then gave us free time for us to go around. Later we enjoyed a nice lunch in an Egyptian restaurant. Next stop is the Pyramids and Sphinx, I would recommend taking the optional camel ride to have a great view of the Pyramids from a distance. We were taken to a Papyrus factory which was interesting and ended up buying some items. Do not hesitate to bargain as all the prices are usually very priced up. As we had some time to kill we took the optional boat trip on the nile by night, it was very refreshing and beautiful. We skipped the khan el khalili market as the kids were too tired and returned to the airport.

This was my second time on this trip with GetYourGuide to Cairo. The trip started with the pickup from the hotel at 4:30am and the flight to Cairo at. 6:00am. Once arrived in Cairo we were picked up by our guide Mariam. She presented very nice the history and locations along the way. We stopped at the Cairo Bazaar, then the Egyptian Museum (the old one since the new one is not yet open) we had a nice boat ride (optional), lunch then went to the Giza Piramids where there were optional visits inside the Piramid and a camel ride (optional for an extra cost. Then we moved to the Sphinx where we had 30 minutes to visit and take photos. There were some extra stops at a papyrus store, cotton store and the last stop before the airport at a shopping mall. This time the flight was scheduled quite late at 23:00 and we spent a few hours at the airport. We landed back in Hurghada at midnight in time for the transfer back to the hotel.

Had a wonderful trip to Cairo. Everything was well arranged, we had a friendly tour guide and the service was good! Only downside is that we thought we would be picked up around 4:30 am (the site said it was from this time), but this turned out to be already at 3:00 am. Beautiful city and many beautiful things seen/experienced! We absolutely recommend this trip.

The tour guide was amazing. Really informative, friendly and welcoming. Also, the groups where small - one thing I would add (it’s not a problem, but could be a little better) on arrival in Cairo to was clear where to meet our tour guide, but found him just outside the main entrance of the airport. I would 100% recommend this tour to everyone. Thank you.

The tour was very well organized. Since there were only two of us, it was possible to react flexibly to our wishes. Bus, driver and guide Mohammed (the 17 millionth) were excellent. However, the bus ride is very exhausting, as it takes almost 24 hours to get there. Nevertheless, the trip is highly recommended!
