Full description
Accompanied by an expert guide you will trace the footsteps of St. Paul, who came to Rome to spread Christianity. Your personal story-teller will meet you and together you will head to the Papal Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls (Basilica Papale di San Paolo Fuori le Mura), one of the four major basilicas of the Roman Catholic church. According to the Christian tradition, the church was built directly over the tomb of the apostle, not far from the site of his martyrdom. The next site you will visit during this tour is the site of St Paul's martyrdom, the Abbey of the Three Fountains, today a quiet and peaceful monastery in the heart of Rome, and one of the most venerated places in the city for pilgrims. Christian tradition holds that the Roman court sentenced the apostle to death for professing his creed. When Paul was beheaded his head bounced three times – miraculously producing three springs of water. You will see the three springs that still flow in the sanctuary of the monastery. The last stop of your tour will be the Mamertine Prison (Carcere Mamertino), the oldest prison in Rome, where the Apostles St. Paul and St. Peter were imprisoned for 9 months and where, according to legend, they miraculously made water appear to baptize the guardians (temporarily closed). Hotel pick-up and site-to-site transportation are not included in the price. After approximately 3.5 hours the tours ends in the very heart of Rome. Some sites are subject to opening hours during special ceremonies, and the order of the sites visited may vary according to circumstances of the day.
