Full description

Immerse yourself into a green archeological area a stone’s throw from the Colosseum and explore two of the ancient Romans’ favorite places of leisure. Save time with an express and complete guided tour featuring insider tips. Let your guide bring to life the impressive ruins of the best-preserved baths in Rome. Marvel at their gigantic walls and wander through the monumental rooms of the Caracalla thermal complex. Be an ancient Roman as you go through the exact steps of a typical day at the baths in the 3rd century AD. Discover the bizarre range of services offered in this ancient spa for both the body and mind. Appreciate the architectural greatness of Imperial Rome and be surprised by the abilities of the ancient engineers. Learn about the labor-intensive underfloor heating system, find out the techniques used to maintain the desired temperature in every room, and admire the geometric motifs on the beautiful mosaics all over the place. Then, head toward what is considered to have been the largest structure for public games ever built by mankind. Standing where the Circus Maximus once existed, learn about the glorious Roman “Ludi,” the spectacular multi-venue celebrations held for up to several days. Listen as your guide tells tales of chariot races, gladiator fights, and the clamor of the public while walking on the soil where they used to take place. Finally, travel back in time to a quasi-legendary era before Rome itself and find out the circus’s foundations in the early myths and gods.

When I first looked out at Circo Massimo, I was disappointed. This tour reversed that assessment and explained my initial reaction: almost all of the stadium is still underground! I learned so much--Circus Maximus was built 500 years before the Colosseum and held far more attendees. The Baths of Caracalla are or at least seem more massive and hulking than the Colosseum and have a fascinating story. Chiara is the reason I walked away with a new appreciation for the Circo Massimo and with a jaw-dropping wonder of the Baths of Caracalla.

I bought this tour as a surprise for my partner, wanting to see something a little off the usual touristy paths and to satisfy our thirst for archeology. We had our tour with Mario (in Italian, we're Italian) and although the day did not start off in the best of ways as it's been pouring for a large wedge of the morning, we truly had the time of our lives. Mario is not just one of the most knowledgeable guides (if not the most) we've ever met but he's also a real wizard, being able to bring us back in time to make us see and feel what an actual day at the Caracalla Bath would have been, back in ancient Rome. We left with dreamy eyes, unable to contain the wonder we felt. Thanks for the experience Mario, we'll never forget it! Grazie davvero!

As I was the only person in the group the tour was not cancelled and became a private one for the same price. Samuele is extremely knowledgeable and willing to share his knowledge. The tour was supposed to last 1h30. It ended up lasting 2h30 (!) and was most informative. I definitely recommend this tour. Thank you Samuele!
