Full description
Explore 2 of the most famous Italian villas on a half-day trip from Rome, following the ancient Roman road of "Via Tiburtina" to Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli. Upon arrival, explore the ruins at the foot of the Tiburtini Hills, where natural springs supply the spa town of Bagni di Tivoli. Along the way, look for the vast quarries of travertine marble. Built in the 2nd century, Hadrian’s Villa was once more powerful and impressive than the center of Imperial Rome and boasts exquisite fountains and gardens. Admire the caryatids and columns of Canopus and Serapeum, the artificial grotto named after an Egyptian temple to the god Serapis, and more. Continue to the Renaissance Villa d'Este, where you can wander the Italianate gardens and discover an abundance of grottoes, frescoes and mosaics. Marvel at fountains that create a graceful symphony of carved stone, and provide shade, sunlight and water. A series of terraces evokes the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, while the underground aqueduct provides testimony to the engineering skill of the Romans.

Nice brake spoiled by inefficiency

The trip to Tivoli, including visits to Villa Del Este and Hadrian's villa, was interesting. It offered a very brief opportunity to admire the architecture and in particular the beautiful gardens of Villa Del Este and the grandiose ruins of Hadrian's villa. The tour was guided by two guides with two polar opposed approaches: David, a gentle, easy going, caring and knowledgable person. The other guide (I don't remember his name) was an impatient and vulgar person. He was mainly interested in adhering to the tour's time table and managed to spoil the tour. Unfortunately, on the way back to Rome the bus broke down. This can happen, although I would expect the organizers of the tour that only perfectly maintained vehicles will be used. They obviously failed here. In addition, the supply of a replacement bus was handled scandalously. For over an hour and a half, we were left stranded, at an obsolete gas station waiting for the replacement bus.

A very interesting visit, with a very friendly guide.

Impeccable organization, a comfortable bus. The guide is very knowledgeable. Cultivated and attentive, he adapted some of his comments according to the geographical origins of the tourists. the visit was carried out in three languages, without any difficulty in switching from one to the other. All with a nice touch of humor!
