Your experience begins at the Hellisheiði Power Plant, located roughly 20 minutes outside of Reykjavík. The power plant is located beneath Mount Hengill and is surrounded by lava fields, moss, and scenic mountain landscapes.

My wife and I are very interested in alternative energy and both have a technical background in math and engineering and so touring this plant was quite enjoyable. However, for the average tourist a guide who conducts the tour might help make the experience more relevant and relatable. There are a lot of technical details presented with very long audio presentations. Make sure to walk out on the balcony and also go into the two side rooms that provide a view of the turbines. I wish we had taken a few minutes to walk around the outside. Be wary of very large tour groups suddenly arriving as that can ruin the experience.

Unfortunately, no guided tour of the turbine hall was possible, otherwise very exciting, especially for visitors interested in technology, less suitable for younger children.
