In the basement, there is a special Egyptology exhibition, thanks to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and his excavations in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. Spend around three hours in Highclere Castle and its grounds before returning back to London.

During the Victorian Era the newly built railways passed this area by, meaning that its medieval charm has been preserved. It was rediscovered by the pioneers of Arts & Crafts Movement and the Pre-Raphaelites in the late Victorian era, who made it fashionable and created lots of small artisan workshops making goods such as furniture, jewelry and ceramics. First we will go to Burford, known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds, an old Market town on the River Windrush that winds around a medieval church with a fascinating history. Then we will visit a variety of villages including Bibury with its Trout Farm and the old Weavers Cottages of Arlington Row. After a meander through nearby villages including Bourton on the Water, we will visit the iconic Broadway Tower for some great views across the countryside.

Immerse yourself in the history of this 19th century castle, still very much a family home, and explore the grounds and beautiful gardens. On the approach to Blenheim Palace you’ll see the graves of Sir Winston and Lady Churchill in the village of Bladon. At Blenheim Palace your tour begins with an introduction to the upstairs and downstairs of a class-conscious life. Built in the early 18th century for the first Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, this historic stately home was the birthplace of Winston Churchill in 1874. Discover how the aristocracy lived and how the state apartments increased in importance, as you move from room to room. After the tour of the house, there will be time for a walk through the landscaped gardens to see the Temple of Diana where Sir Winston Churchill proposed to Clementine Hozier in 1908.

Starting in central London, your tour will take you to the first location that you will visit which is about 70 miles out of London. The journey lasts between 1.5-2 hours (depending on traffic). Upon your arrival at the historic 10th century farmstead that featured as Yew Tree Farm in Series 4 and 5, take a guided tour of this location, which featured as the home of Mr Drewe, the struggling tenant who agrees to secretly help raise Lady Edith’s daughter. From here you will set off to the heart of rural Oxfordshire where several villages have been used in the world of Downton Abbey. You will see ‘Kirbymoorside’, where Anna’s bus splashes through the stream outside the pub where Bates worked when he left Downton Abbey. There will be a short stop at the church that Matthew and Edith visit in Series 1 (Episode 3) and you’ll pass the pub where Branson and Lady Sybil stay when they elope in Series 2. Most notably you will visit Downton Village where you will get a guided tour of the village and see familiar sites such as exteriors of Downton hospital, the village pub, the former home of Matthew Crawley and the local church amongst others. Following this guided tour you will be able to explore the village for yourself. From here you will then head to the star of the show itself: Downton Abbey, located in Berkshire. It will take approximately one hour to get to Highclere Castle from Downton Village and upon arrival, you can take lunch and receive a self-guided leaflet which shows you around the main above stairs rooms of the property that have been used in the show. You will also have a chance to explore the beautiful grounds of the property as well. The tour finishes at your hotel in central London.
