Full description

Enjoy a frozen adventure in the wilderness of the Skaftafell reserve in Iceland's Vatnajökull National Park, full of glacial lagoons, ice caves, and glacial landscapes. Hike across the tongue of the impressive Vatnajökull glacier in the company of an expert guide.

Start with a short safety briefing and collect the necessary equipment for your icy expedition at the Skaftafell Terminal before you board a shuttle to the glacial area.

Set off across a canvas of otherworldly landscapes and marvel at the majesty of the peaks and raw terrain on the 8km trail to the ice cap. Vatnajökull glacier is the second largest in area in Europe, covering 8% of Iceland's total landmass.

Strap on your crampons and walk upon this 900 meters deep, jagged ice blanket. See the different ice formations, crevasses, and sculptures on a visit to an ice cave, and get panoramic views over Skaftafell National Park as you climb higher on the glacial wall.

The hike is more than just a dose of adrenalin. Learn how these colossal glaciers in Iceland formed and hear how their future is threatened by global warming.

Return to the starting point at Skaftafell Terminal, and revel in the joy of having just visited one of Iceland's greatest natural wonders.

A superb discovery thanks to SAM our guide. She was very considerate and knew how to share her love for the glacier with us during the 5 hour hike with a lunch break at the top! If you really want to discover the glacier and not just walk a little on the ice then you have to take this 5h hike and not 3h. We have had several experiences with TrollsExpedition and highly recommend it.

The activity itself is fantastic, the guides are super prepared, ready to help at any time and provide detailed, very clear and not boring explanations on the glacier, making the trek very interesting. Trekking is not impossible but it is quite challenging especially for those who are not in good physical shape but do not be scared and enjoy a spectacle of nature. The 4 stars are for the "rent" of trekking shoes (you do not pay only if you have high trekking shoes), we had low ones and therefore it was not possible to fasten the crampons. however I do not find it correct since it is not specified in the description and it would have been advisable to give it free of charge given the overall cost of the activity. 1500kr for a pair of shoes used by everyone and quite dated seems excessive to me.

Our guide Catherine (I'm not too sure) was fantastic, lots of passion and humour. He took great care of us and made the excursion very enjoyable. The only thing that accompanied him was another Federico monitor who could have stayed, not only did he not help but he threw himself all the time scolding when he was the first disrespectful to the place hitting the peak on the glacier etc.
