Full description

Go back in time to some of the most iconic moments from the civil rights movement with this fascinating African American history tour of Washington DC. Discover some of history's most captivating moments and allow your guide to paint a picture of the city from the African American perspective.

Get picked up at the U.S. Navy Memorial and head to monuments such as the Emancipation Statue, Howard Theatre, and vibrant local black communities. Stand where Martin Luther King stood when he gave his famous "I have a dream" address and feel the weight of the world on your shoulders.

After taking a glimpse into the past at the Home of Frederick Douglas, proceed to Howard University - one of the oldest black universities in the United States. On the way to Howard University, you will drive by Lincoln Park to visit the statue of educator, activist, and founder of the National Council of Negro Women - Mary McLeod Bethune. Following your visit to the beautiful Howard University campus, drive through Le Driot Park, Shaw Neighborhood, and Historic “U” Street. Home to the largest urban African American community in the United States in the early 1900’s, it created its own “Black Broadway” - a home to entertainment legends from the past and present.

Next, see the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum to discover how the course of the Civil War was impacted by these disenfranchised soldiers. You will then take a journey into downtown DC to the sites of the national headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women, Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue, the White house and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

Once downtown, enter the Logan Circle historic district to see the historic Metropolitan AME Church and the Mary McLeod Bethune Council house. Finish the tour at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Enter inside and explore the absorbing artifacts and exhibits at your leisure.

Our guide Dre was absolutely amazing! I learned so much on that tour. If you want a real account of U.S. History then you definitely need to take this tour. It will make you realize how much the American education system is a colossal mess that needs to be completely revamped. They don’t teach you about anything that I learned during that tour in school. People deserve to learn the COMPLETE version of American History, not the "sanitized" version that’s sadly been circulating in schools for several generations. It was a great tour that I highly recommend!

Great guide and safe driver! Good information, very good follow up and answers to questions. Christopher was warm and friendly and the tour was legit and informative. Lost one star because: No overview of the tour itself so we didn’t know what was coming in overview. An overview of tour can provide info like when bathroom breaks come in within the tour. Telling us there is no stopping at Douglas’s house fits nicely into overview, with reason since none was given for the omission. We couldn’t even see it from the outside?

This was an amazing tour. Our guide, Deion, was absolutely amazing. He took us to great sites and gave us a very understandable background story at each site. So we truly appreciated the significance and real importance of each site. Deion really captured the attention of the college age students in our group. I don’t even think they blinked when Deion talked, especially the last story that tied the events together. I can’t thank Deion enough for putting his heart and soul into our tour. It brings tears to my eyes to imagine all of the hearts and minds that Deion has touched. (Mine included) DEION is THE BEST tour guide we have ever had. If you are looking for a life changing tour, then take this one with Deion. We are very grateful to this tour company and Deion. Very safe and good driver too.
